Project Type: Prisoner of War/Missing in Action National Memorial
The Prisoner of War/Missing in Action National Memorial was formally dedicated at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA on September 16, 2005. It stands in honor to all American prisoners of war and those listed as missing. In less than five years it is expected to be the largest cemetery in the national system. In six decades, it will have more than 1.4 million honored veterans. More than 777,000 soldiers have been taken prisoner or gone missing during the country’s various wars.
The POW/MIA Memorial was designated as a national memorial by the U.S. Congress through Public Law 108-454 on December 10, 2004. A Vietnam veteran sculpted the bronze statue, which depicts an American serviceman on his knees with hands bound by his captors. The statue is surrounded by black marble pillars that evoke imprisonment. Design features include and entry walk to the Memorial Site, Central Plaza with associated granite walls, pillars and steps, pedestal mount for the center sculpture and structural site design elements adjacent to the water edge.
Mr. Zollner was involved in the construction document phase, which included the finalization of the plans, specifications, estimates and quality control of the memorial design package.
