Project Type: Clover Island Shoreline Improvements, Phase 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
Clover Island, connected by a land causeway and adjacent to the landmark Ed Hendler Bridge, is located off the shoreline of the Columbia River. Encompassing 16 acres, it is currently home to numerous businesses including a hotel, restaurants, offices, marine facilities and the Coast Guard.
The intent of the improvement is to capitalize on the cultural, historical and recreational values of this special place by creating a heightened and memorable ‘experience’ for tourists, the surrounding community, business and recreational users that visit the island by vehicles, cycling, walking or by boat.
High energy gathering places included within Phase 1: lighthouse, plaza, main gateway structure, overlooks of the Columbia River, and also utility design and installation along the causeway.
Future development will include intense bioengineering and native plantings to encourage protection of fish and upland habitat. Also, plazas, walkways and a range of outdoor spaces that are culturally sensitive to the island are scheduled.
ZLA is working with John Fetterolf Engineering Design Group on the Design Development and final phases of Clover Island.
